i began my explorations in vhdl about an year back.
and the tool was quartus 2 from altera which works on windows platform.
this year i have shifted to xilinx ise.
the linux version of xilinx can be installed in ubuntu,
this tool is not available in ubuntu repository, but those who need it can download it free of cost from the xilinx website.

ip core which comes with xilinx ise is a quiet comfortable while working with real life problems in vhdl.
